Every year there are thousands of home fires caused by the build up of of lint from your clothes dryer in the exhaust system. But a little DIY Dryer Vent cleaning, is an a easy and inexpensive job if you know what to do and my husband Dave walks through the simple steps to get 'er done.
It's actually a pretty easy job if you have the muscles to move your dryer, and you own a screwdriver, a cordless drill and a vacuum cleaner! There are a number of dryer vent brushes available on Amazon, Lowes or Home Depot.
Honestly, moving the dryer is the hardest part. Then just slowly run your drill while moving the cleaner back and forth, ever deeper into the vent opening. Work it a little at a time. There are some that have a hookup that lets you run your shop vac at the same time to suck out the loose particles. Once you've made it all the way through, slowly bring it back (continue spinning it), and it will pull out most of the lint. Then you are going to want a strong shop vac (clean the filters of your shop vac!!!) to suck out all the loose lint. Once you've gotten most of it out, you can run it in reverse to blow out whatever lint you couldn't suck out.
Lastly, reinstall your flexible dryer vent to the dryer. It's likely that it's a mess, so you might want to buy a new one. They usually attach via a couple of O-rings that you can easily tighten with a flat head screw driver! Congrats! DIY Dryer Vent cleaning accomplished!
